The first motive power on many railroads was horses or mules, But most lines quickly adopted steam locomotives.Cooper's
tiny Tom Thumb in 1830 developed perhaps one horsepower; While the Union Pacific"Big Boy" built in the
1940's weighed about 400 tons and developed 7000 horsepower.
