Movie1.gif The first motive power on many railroads was horses or mules, But most lines quickly adopted steam locomotives.Cooper's tiny Tom Thumb in 1830 developed perhaps one horsepower; While the Union Pacific"Big Boy" built in the 1940's weighed about 400 tons and developed 7000 horsepower.
They tried electric power but it never fell through.Most of the locomotives now are diesel powered.
